does your A.A. contain this patch:
"kernel: allow __netdev_alloc_skb_ip_align to be called with dev = NULL"

It has been backported only recently.

Moreover, if the patch is in your image and you continue to experience this problem, it would be nice if you could provide us the output of the kernel OOPS so that we can try to better understand where the problem is coming from. It could also be something wrong in openwrt which is triggered only when you add a new interface to batman-adv.

I can confirm this on AA 12.09 final with 2013.3 release 5. AA 12.09 final with 2013.03 release 3 does not have this problem.

On adding any interface, the device resets immediately. I couldn't find my ttl serial console, but piping the output of the kernel log to a file yielded no output after the restart.

12.09 final does not have the "kernel: allow __netdev_alloc_skb_ip_align to be called with dev = NULL" patch. Should this bug be reported on OpenWRT to ask them to backport this?

It has been backported recently:

I don't know into which release it ended up, but at least it is in the stable repository now.
Maybe you have to download the very latest AA release? I don't know how it works.
For more details it is better to refer to the openwrt channels.

Ok. All works fine with batman-adv 2013.3.0 and Attitude Adjustment r37838.
